Artist/Title: GAISER | BLANK FADE

In a genre where artists often struggle for identity, Jon Gaiser is one of those rare producers whose sound is instantly recognisable. The solo projects, collaborations and remixes he’s created over the course of his output on Minus, all contain a very specific signature to the point where his tracks come alive, communicating in a language that speaks with the strangest, most intoxicating of tongues.

His highly anticipated debut album, Blank Fade, is no exception, and it sees him pushing the envelope even further resulting in the most comprehensive and impressive body of work he has accomplished so far. Alongside this he has taken full advantage of the vinyl, digital and CD formats on offer to not only produce a collection of stunning individual tracks but also to mix them together in a way that typically reflects his live performance. The body of the tracks remain the same but Gaiser works the seamless transitions to the max by extending the intros and outros to reproduce those magical live moments when a third place momentarily slips into view. In doing so he has created an experience where the whole piece becomes greater than the sum of the parts.

Blank Fade represents a mixture of tried and tested ideas generated on the road (such as the show-stopping first single Trunkated) and new material written during Minus’ 10 weeks of silence. The main premise for the album is to start in one place and end up in another without realising and seeing how Gaiser’s music works like a soundtrack to some hidden nocturnal habitat, full of weird and wonderful creatures that stalk the darkness, it’s not long before we’re lost in the forest of his imagination.

Eerie and atmospheric, Volve sets the scene perfectly, drifting amid a wash of distant echoes and ghostly EFX before a solitary kick drum punctures the darkness. Face Down continues the theme, gradually picking up the pace as the beats begin alternating around a tight, metronomic snare. A pulsing sub bass loop carries the groove while abstract vocal cut-ups penetrate deep into the subconscious. With a perfectly executed mix, Ground effortlessly switches to a 4/4 kick pattern as Gaiser slowly turns the screw, continuing the unearthly vocal theme against a sparse backdrop of crackling electricity and metallic drones. Suddenly we’re in classic territory as Ciliate With lets fly with a trademark bass riff that’s soon joined by one of those memorable bleeping call and response riffs that could only ever be the work of Gaiser.

Whether Or Not maintains the tension with an equally urgent bass line and a brutal snare that powers head first into a swarm of warping synth lines, before Substance B turns in a percussive frenzy that’s as devastating as it is intuitive and will create absolute mayhem on the dance floor. The CD overlap into Comma, Fade is as good as they get, ushering in a more subliminal groove driven by a funked up bass/organ riff and cantering percussion, while Leave It dims the lights once again with pitched down vocals and distant, drifting sirens that add a hint of menace to the mix.

This all sets things up perfectly for Trunkated - a real powerhouse of a track, that’s as complete as anything you’re likely to hear this year. Every element is honed to perfection from the molten bass to the irresistible percussion parts, from the mischievous, dancing bleeps to the twisted synth motif that seems to rip through the delicate fabric of reality. Descending Order then goes into freefall, releasing the pressure value as distant melodies gently eat into your serotonin supply and you lose yourself in the breakdown. One After continues the theme utilising a sliding, bass driven variation of the preceding melody as the beats finally begin to thin out, allowing the slow, ambient drift of Outline to smooth out the fragmented memories of what has gone before and draw things neatly to a close.

Finally, the unmixed digital download album also includes the bonus track Rate 78.17, a beatless exercise in bass manipulation that represents another experimental string to Gaiser’s bow and in doing so, suggests there’s much more to come from this exceptional producer, musician and live performer.

“Never say never,” goes the old phrase, but Marcin Czubala might see it differently.

For Marcin, never is a state of mind-not the site of the unthinkable but a space for alternate possibilities, imaginative leaps and unfamiliar physics. Chronicles of Never is a report back from Marcin’s personal otherworlds, a collection of postcards from a fleeting place.

There are those that say that house and techno are “singles genres,” that they don’t lend themselves to the album format. To the long list of albums that prove those critics wrong, add Chronicles of Never. Marcin’s first album for mobilee-and in fact his first full-length since 2001, despite dozens of singles over the years-is not just a collection of dance tracks. While remaining faithful to an undeniable physical impulse, Marcin has granted himself uncommonly free rein to explore every corner of his psyche, with results running from the unburdened to the manic, from the sensual to the spaced-out. They all flow together like the colors of the spectrum, emotional states bleeding into others in tracks that twist and turn as imperceptibly as the moments of a long night out.

The album’s cohesive sense of freedom stems in large part to the way it was recorded, over a span of seven or eight months in which Marcin liberated himself from pressures and deadlines. Certain sounds and motifs occur and reoccur-muted hand drums, faraway voices, gleaming keyboards and dusty syncopations. But despite a certain consistency of mood-there’s something hushed about Marcin’s
music, even at its most intense-every track invents its own world and operates according to its own logic. Not the logic of the club, or much less the logic of “minimal,” but a unique atmosphere for each, a unique ecology of sounds adapted specifically to their environment.

“Daybreak” makes for an obvious album opener, incorporating silken, luminous tones and a teasing set of chords; it unfolds as slowly and inexorably as its title would suggest. “Berolina,” the album’s first single, is all stoned seduction and weightlessness, full of contorted arpeggios, bubbly percussion and a devastatingly sexy female voice whispering sweet nothings in the listener’s ear. Of the title, Marcin
reveals that Berolina was the train connecting his city with Berlin, and thus “my first contact with the city, people, clubs and music.” You can hear that youthful sense of expectation and uncertainty in every sultry, slightly creepy phrase.

“Los Compañeros,” inspired by Marcin’s first tour of Mexico, is one of the album’s stand-out club tracks, propelled by economical percussion and insistent looped vocals; halfway through, queasy keyboards fill the soundfield, making this one of the eeriest club hits of the year. “Pravda” is more upbeat, full of bright, glassy percussion with just the right degree of swing. But even here there’s a smidgen of dread, a subconscious sense of unease that comes to the fore when a voice intones, “You can’t trust anyone.”

What on earth is an “Alibi Room”? Judging by the course of this 11-minute track, the album’s centerpiece, it’s a place where fantastic narratives are spun, where reality is turned inside out. Accordingly, the song feels like a live set in miniature, a kind of short story that moves from chapter to chapter-from a dryly percussive intro to a curious breakdown in which an acoustic bass roams freely in a kind of reverie, and finally closing out with four minutes of nostalgic harpsichord. It’s hard to say what exactly took place in the alibi room, but there’s no doubt that you emerge different than you were before entering.

“Dazed & Confused” offers the listener a chance to work all the doubt out of his or her system: it’s a savvy exercise in focused, minimalist funk, with lots of tiny acoustic drum samples scattering like drops of water on a hot skillet. “Spectacles for Humans” takes a similar rhythmic idea and drapes it in jewel-like synthesizer tones. Echoes of Detroit resound in the warm strings that swell in the background. This is
another daybreak track, but it hangs in the balance between the promise of a new day and the last contemplation of time past. “30 May 2007″ expresses a similar sort of ambivalence, a hallmark of Marcin’s very personal approach to music. Named in honor of the birth of his son, it is on the surface a celebratory track-but odd detunings and frantic arpeggios suggest the unease that invariably comes with fatherhood. It’s a leap into dark water.

The album closes out with two of Marcin’s deepest tracks to date. “At the Beach in San Foca”-named in homage to the place where he first debuted the track, and which subsequently went mad-is a slow, controlled burn that periodically flares up in the form of muted horns and panned, echoing voices. Sweeping filters and syncopated piano chords push the track ever forward, while a deep sub-bass
grounds it firmly in the now. Finally, “Be Water” slows down and practices what it preaches, sending sampled percussion and xylophone tones into a winding current that’s tugged at by eddying chords; it’s a liberating finale to an album that’s all about finding one’s freedom.

“The advantage of electronic music is its freedom from interpretation,” says Marcin. “I’m not giving you a painting, just the brush and the paints. Chronicles of Never is the chronicle of an imaginary place. Your place.”

A1: Elphine

As a constant part of various Radio and DJ Playlists worldwide, “Elphine” is creeping into your subconsciousness in a frisky way and produces positive energy. So make sure your aerials are on reception and your controllers on maximum position.

A2: Elphine (Zander VT Remix)

It was a quiet time for Zander VT lately, but with their new remix (as well as an upcoming 12″ on BPitch Control) the two Berlin based DJs and producers are back with an impressive sign of live and deliver a delicious work on here. The characteristic

B: Elphine (Troy’s One Eyed JAK Remix)

These days, the american-born Troy Pierce lives in the german capital Berlin. Constantly creating big furore with his releases on Richie Hawtin’s label M_nus, Mr. Pierce has put his magic fingers on Ellen Allien’s track “Elphine” - the result is a unique remix, pushed by an impulsive bassline and the new arranged vocals, taken from the Original.

Marc Houle follows 2007’s Techno Vocals EP with a string of releases that experiment with the true potential of the digital download age, 3 tracks released per week for one month.

The project aptly titled Sixty-Four represents an exciting phase in Marc Houle’s production cycle with most of the year having been spent testing ideas for his album. As a result, these twelve tracks were only ever meant to represent ‘work in progress’, functioning primarily as DJ tools for Magda, Troy Pierce and Richie Hawtin over the summer with Marc also performing them live on the road and during the Contakt shows. However, exactly because of their ‘in-between’ nature, their inherent quirkiness and route one approach the crowds have really taken to them and other DJs have been desperate to get their hands on them. To satisfy demand, Minus has put together this very special series of digital releases for August, before a double pack 12″ hits the shops in September featuring seven carefully selected tracks.

They contain such a wealth of unique and twisted sounds that it’s a challenge finding adjectives to describe them. Houle attacks each idea with verve and tenacity, constantly varying the unconventional line up of machines at his disposal, in fact there’s a vast collection of equipment on display here - early analogue synths, sequencers and drum machines, 80s digital synths, modern buchla synths, samplers, vocals, acoustic drums, electronic trigger pads, bass guitar - even a vst! The result is a plethora of sound encapsulating different styles and multi - coloured dimensions as each track revolves around a musical motif that’s subsequently stretched, contorted and wrenched in every direction possible. It all works perfectly as Houle never loses sight of the basic orthodoxies needed to make a techno track kick.

Week 1 sees the digital release of Sands, Deathray At You and Jouster, and the depth and quality of sound generated from his arsenal of machines is immediately apparent. Just check out the heavily treated raw bleeps and blips that usher in the huge, filtered bass loop on Sands. Every element is given space to breathe as the slow techno groove constructs around a dark acid bassline before the 808 hats introduce more beautifully crafted sounds, creating a lush analogue landscape. The beginning of Deathray At You reflects the title perfectly. A four-note descending bassline then takes the floor and Houle starts running amok with a selection of modulated effects that literally pull the sound inside out while the unobtrusive beats keep everything ticking over. Jouster combines more classic beats with laser cheeky unquantized toms and a low slung, warbling bassline in a rough and ready style including a classic, sampled vocal section.

There’s a strong reference to 80s computer and video game culture during week 2 with Buchla9 as it leaps and cavorts across the sonic spectrum - Just wait for the bass to kick in. Steeplechase is another high-end mixing tool continuing the theme of machines in meltdown with a fuzzy bassline slowly warping up and down while the loose groove speaks with a lazy tongue. Door Nobula then rounds off the instalment with a more aggressive techno workout. The beat hammers the point home with lethal precision as a twisted, freaking acid line dominates the majority of the track.

Week 3 returns to a slightly more sedate state of affairs with Flapping Around displaying some distinct early techno tendencies although its not long before Houle launches the unassuming riff and we’re off again. Selection 12 contains authentic bass guitar work, looped and filtered against a backdrop of delayed drum rolls and thick, reverberating swathes of guitar. The post punk overtones bring a dark, brooding quality to the project making it a welcome but not entirely out of place departure. Ketchup and Beans then kicks in with a tasty electro-funk groove. It’s an infectious dancefloor warmer complete with bouncing, elastic bassline and hypnotic hook taking control and ordering you to dance.

As we enter the home straight of this mammoth release, the fantastically titled Meatier Shower rains down as the title implies, complete with raw sampled hook line and creative interplay between the bass and a Magda vocal. It’s a bomb that detonates with insane harpsichord riffing at the end and a deeply meaningful last note. Investments instigates more mischief with shifting time signatures and delay effects that disorientate the dancefloor before What Are You Doin brings the curtain down. Drifting amid a haze of classic beats and a self referencing cut up vocal, it revolves around a programmed sequence, chattering in a way that reaffirms Marc Houle’s complete and almost unnerving control over his machines.

Sascha Funke is back…

After his second album “MANGO” (BPC167) and an expanded US tour together with Ellen Allien, the dynamic four-power team Sascha Funke, DJ Koze and Tobias Thomas & Superpitcher present the new Mango Remixes. With catalogue number BPC180 comes the summer soundtrack from Berlin based label BPitch Control. This artist line-up is definitely high class. Hanging out together and travelling across the country, the close friends were inspired and created their own summer language - the “MANGO speech” was born. Of course it was an affair of honour that the Hamburg based DJ Koze and both of the Cologne artists contribute their remixes for the album track “Mango”. ”All for one and one for all” the soundtrack of the “Mangobrothers”.

RELEASE: MONDAY 4th AUGUST 2008

A: Mango Cookie (DJ Koze’s Pink Moon Rmx)

The killer remix from Hamburg with an impressive length of 12 minutes. Suspense is the keyword. The solid kickdrum will grab you immediately and shake you around. Not to mention the vocal parts DJ Koze used from the album track “The Fortune Cookie Symphony”, which explains the name of this remix as well. The tempo increases and is heating up slowly. But take care of yourself after the break - the bassline will blow you away. Pink Moon is rising.

B: Mango (Tobias Thomas & Superpitcher’s Como Mango Version)

The answer from Cologne. What a smasher. The Como Mango Version is more close to the original track by Sascha Funke, but, of course, Tobias Thomas & Superpitcher flavour their remix with their own interpretation of “Mango”. The vocals, sung by Superpitcher, were especially recorded for this remix and create the characteristic sound and unique accent. Finally, this dreamy track is perfect club material and a hundred percent guarantee for standing ovation. We remember the moment when the blinds at Panorama Bar opened and the whole area was flood by the incoming morning sun. We want to comment this with Superpitcher’s own words: “Give me Mango baby!”

Monika Kruse’s third and final EP release from her upcoming first solo album “Changes of Perception” features three tracks that encapsulate her diverse influences and commence her new direction.

Wackypaky is an innovative mixture of vocals and percussive patterns, mixing old-school Detroit house with modern-thinking music production. Its complex pattern of melody lines produces an emotional track that hooks you in.
When I Woke Up is a track we can all relate to, a nod to the confusion following a long night of partying. Its crazy drum patterns and warm and strong sub-bass builds a deep, mesmerising foundation of a track.

Sung by Monika Kruse herself, Don’t Come Close is a withdrawn record. The portrayal of a couple’s first meeting it captures the spark and intensity of the moment. A perfect musical flow of rhythm and melody, it heightens the heartbeat and in its vivid vocals Monika shows her capacity to create a song full of life and feeling.Monika Kruse co-produced these tracks with Gregor Tresher for the forthcoming ‘Changes of Perception’ album coming in September. This is the final EP sampler from the project and shows the bandwidth of their combined talents, inspiration coming from their depth of experience and knowledge.

This will be Monika’s debut artist album and marks her stature as an artist and female spearheading the new movement of fresh, underground electronic music bringing people across the World together.

After setting the scene alight with numerous killer singles, Israeli producer Guy J releases his hotly anticipated full length artist album with label heavyweights, Bedrock Records.

Guy J has emerged over the course of the last two years to represent an intrinsic part of the Israeli dance music juggernaut that has been steadily powering through clubland in recent times.

Along with fellow countrymen Guy Gerber, Sholmi Aber, Chaim and Gel Abril, Guy has been at the forefront of a movement back towards the melody rich sounds on which House music is based.Guy’s productions, with their driving beats, shimmering synths and journey-like qualities, embody characteristics from all manner of House music.

Guy states “I didn’t set out to write an album - I just wrote tracks when I was in different moods, hence each track having different types of genres, different influences.” He adds, “This is the album I wanted to make… it has a warm sound… it’s very sexy and really tells a story.”

On this, his debut artist album, Guy fully exploits the opportunity to explore the length and breadth of his creative capacity. Alongside the dance floor orientated cuts on which he has built his reputation, Guy straddles moods of ambient, techno and electronica whilst constantly maintaining a melodic and highly emotive core. Anyone who appreciated the majesty of Nathan Fake’s ‘Drowning in a Sea of Love’ will instantly feel at home with ‘Esperanza’, as would fans of the Kompakt or Border Community sound where the focus is first and foremost on musicality.

‘Indigo Fields’ opens up the album perfectly and immediately encapsulates the rich tapestry of sound for which Guy J is famed. Following on, ‘Nebula’ highlights the dancefloor focused underbelly of the album by marrying dark, driving bass with Chicago-influenced synth-stabs that leave you doubtless of Guy’s sonic capabilities. ‘Geko’ again picks up a strand of the classic house blueprint albeit this time in slower and more twisted fashion. Guy’s first single ‘Under Pressure’ appears on the album in a slightly more restrained album version. Flourishes of synthesis and noise appear and disappear as the track travels patiently through peeks and troughs of intensity.

By the time ‘Druma’ jerks into the frame you realise you are experiencing the work of a genuine musical talent. Epic slabs of sound are stacked atop glitchy lo-fi drums which results in a listening experience that simply swallows you whole. Closing track ‘Esperanza’ completes the journey and in archetypal Guy J fashion it’s a musically dense trip that is dynamic enough to keep you hanging until the very last beat.

Hernan Cattaneo, Sasha and Tiga are among Guy’s many supporters thanks to consistently releasing sterling tracks. In support of the album, the three singles ‘Under Pressure’, ‘Geko’ and ‘Mirko’ are all being released through Bedrock Records in the coming weeks and months.

What is without question is that Guy has managed to produce an album that is brimming with soul, a feat which an artist can toil for an entire lifetime hoping to achieve.

Bedrock Records Head Honcho John Digweed says “Guy J has emerged over the last couple of years with every production getting better and better. I realised that Guy had a great ear for making club tracks but with this album project Guy has really pushed himself further musically, delivering an album full of diversity with a warm melodic contemporary sound. I feel this album would sit well setting you up for a night out, helping you wind down at an after party or even just lazing by the pool. The crisp beats and beautiful melodies lock you in from start to finish.” And we couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

A bonus CD has been included with the album featuring club mixes of 7 of Guy’s tracks including Geko & Esparanza… Appearing on the CD are 2 new unreleased tracks from Guy, so make sure you pick up this great little package. Oh, and if this wasn’t enough, there will be an exclusive digital mix of the club tracks mixed by Guy J with the digital release.

Following from the pioneering and heralded ‘Bugnology’ mix in 2004, and the equally outstanding ‘Bugnology 2′ in 2006, ‘Bugnology 3′ is now with us.

The mix presents a detailed, mesmerising journey through Bug’s current musical addiction and also takes a snapshot of a very exciting time in dance music - where genres and barriers are continually being broken, in the name of exciting, forward thinking and free-flowing house music.

Like its earlier brothers, ‘Bugnology 3′ is a genuine masterpiece in next generation DJ mixes. Not only did Steve carefully select each track featured here - no doubt club-tested and dancefloor approved - but there was a unique process of editing, looping, stretching or shortening involved, to ensure the whole mix flows like no other. Like Steve’s outstanding DJ performances, this mix strikes a subtle balance between the dangerously cool and the deliciously funky.

Opening with the dense atmospheres of Anton Zap’s ‘Captain Storm’, and building steadily through tracks from Federico Molinari, Tigerskin and Moodymanc, the surging melodies and rising synths of Santigo Salazar’s ‘Materia Obscura’ on Rush Hour bring the first wave of elation to the mix. Riding the first waves of euphoria, Bug brings things back down and deep with Two Armadillos’ ‘Hamlin’, from his own Dessous imprint. From here on in it’s depth and energy all the way as more big-room synths are brought into play by George Kagais, and Stimming’s smooth phasing remix of Manuel Tur’s ‘Vabanque’.

Keeping things grooving past the half way maker with Pigon and Peace Division’s deep, driving overlapping beats, the mix rolls on with underground intensity, and a wonderful and bizarre slice of deep funk is introduced in the shape of Lee Jones’ ‘Weisses Kaninchen’. The Per Eckbo Orchestra’s samba-party ‘Kodo Verano’ is another highlight at this point, followed quickly by the tingling melodies of Schatrax’s stunning remix of Daso & Pawas’ ‘Det’. Percussion and horns galore fill the spectrum as Sven U.K & Andomat 3000’s workout ‘O Moresi’ carries on the party, crossing paths with a crazy collaboration between Ripperton and Alex Attias.

Trendsetter extraordinaire Damian Schwartz’s ‘1568 Drexel Ave’ is next in line as Steve picks up the intensity even more, mixing into the grinding heavy weight beats of Ben Klock’s ‘Steady Plus’, before taking things down a more cerebral route. Rising N.Y.C. star Adultnapper’s ‘Madeleine’ is a tripping late night journey track that fits perfectly with Matthias Meyer’s beautiful and sultry ‘Tout Va Bien’.

As if it Steve couldn’t resist one last intense moment, Kink & Neville Watson’s rising acidic masterpiece ‘Inside Out’ is the penultimate adventure of the mix, rocking the system before October’s wonderfully tripped-out ‘Invitation’ leads off us into the realm of the senses…

It’s another sensational and cutting-edge mix from Steve Bug, displaying his love for such a variety of sounds and sensations and his one-of-a-kind intuition as a DJ… Bug yourself out.
